Santos Bets Big on Australia's Next Energy Frontier

← Back to all posts

Australia's energy future may hinge on a stretch of ocean most people have never heard of. Santos has secured a major drilling rig to explore the Bedout Basin, located off the coast of Western Australia, in a campaign the company believes could rival the North West Shelf, one of the most productive hydrocarbon regions in the country's history.

The exploration program is scheduled to begin in 2027 and will not be a solo effort. BP, the London-listed oil super major, is involved, lending the campaign considerable financial firepower and technical credibility. At least one well will also be drilled on acreage that Santos holds jointly with Carnarvon Energy, a smaller Australian-listed explorer, and Taiwan's state-owned CPC Corporation.

What makes this significant for everyday Australians? Santos has estimated the Bedout Basin could contain close to one billion barrels of oil and gas equivalent. To put that in context, the North West Shelf has underpinned Australian domestic gas supply and LNG exports for decades. If the Bedout Basin delivers even a fraction of that potential, it could materially shift Australia's long term energy supply picture at a time when domestic gas shortfalls are already a concern for east coast households and industry.

There are important caveats. Exploration is high risk by nature, the presence of hydrocarbons is not confirmed, and a single promising well does not a resource make. Carnarvon Energy has previously drilled in the Bedout Basin with mixed results, and the path from exploration success to production is measured in years and billions of dollars.

Still, the participation of BP, a company that selects frontier exploration opportunities globally, suggests the geological thesis has earned serious external scrutiny. For retail investors watching Santos, this is a long-dated optionality story, not a near term earnings catalyst.

"A lot of us geologists have some area where we've said, 'Oh boy, if the economics are right, we should go for that.'"— Paul Henshaw, former Chevron exploration geologist
